Riot Games have shared its viewership numbers for the 2014 League of Legends World Championships and things are looking great for Esports.
This years tournament was played across 15 days, with over 100 hours of games and other content broadcast to viewers worldwide. The World Championships saw 288 million cumulative daily unique impressions, a figure calculated by taking the total number of unique viewers on all 15 days and adding them together. In terms of hours that’s 179 million total watched online, worldwide in that 15 day span.
The final best of five match between Samsung Blue and Star Horn Royal Club attracted a huge number of concurrent viewers, 11.2 million to be exact. That’s a rise from the 2013 final, which still managed a respectable 8.7 million.
Viewership number like these coupled with some frankly ridiculous prize pools (Dota 2‘s International 2014, I’m looking at you) show that Esports is a thing, and it’s here to stay.
