Sony’s secrets: Poor redactions show first-party development costs

The Last of Us Part 2 cost $200 million to make.

Poor redactions in its own documents have revealed Sony’s expenditure when it comes to development of first-party titles.

Through reporting by The Verge, in which scans of redacted documents reveal the figures hidden by a black sharpie, we now know that The Last of Us Part 2 cost $220 million to make, and Horizon Forbidden West, $212 million.

The documents also show that Guerrilla made Horizon Forbidden West with 300 employees over five years. Naughty Dog had around 20 employees working on TLoU Part 2.

The Verge tries to pick up on other redacted figures in documents provided as part of the US’ Federal Trade Commission’s hearing into Microsoft’s planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

“According to SIE internal surveys, almost half of PlayStation 5 owners in the United States also own a Nintendo Switch, while less than 20% of PlayStation 5 owners in the United States also own an Xbox Series X or S,” reads one such redacted sentence, the outlet reports.
