Paramount+ drops Star Trek Prodigy; Season 2 looks for new home

A horrible surprise.

Paramount+ has unceremoniously dropped Star Trek Prodigy, forcing producers to look for a new home for the animated series.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Season 2 of the animated series is currently in production; producers CBS Studios “will shop both seasons to a new buyer,” meaning the unseen second season could still grace our screens somewhere else.

Prodigy, alongside additional series Grease Rise of the Pink Ladies, The Game and Queen of the Universe, will be removed from Paramount+ as tax write-offs. Performance was cited as the reasoning why.

“We have faith this show will be picked up by a new home to help grow our fervent fanbase and inspire the next generation of Star Trek fans,” Prodigy creators Dan and Kevin Hageman said on Twitter.

“Our talented and passionate team of artists are working tirelessly to complete S2,” they continued. “And we are staying positive and hopeful that our amazing fans will get to see it soon! Janeway would never give up, so why would we? Let’s follow her orders and ‘Go Boldly.’”

We were incredibly surprised at the heart and storytelling of the animated series; while intended for children, it dealt with some heavy themes at the same time it propelled the story of a large number of Voyager crew including Kathryn Janeway and Chakotay.

Here’s hoping Season 2 (and beyond) finds a new home soon.

Paramount recently announced new Star Trek in the form of Riverdale-like Star Trek Starfleet Academy and Section 31 movie starring Michelle Yeoh. Fans don’t seem eager for those entries — I personally would prefer Star Trek Prodidy to continue alongside the announcement of a Star Trek Legacy series.
