Microsoft has experimented with a number of ways to bring Xbox quality games to your phone and tablet, including a prototype modular controller that looks very similar to Nintendo’s JoyCon.
As revealed by Windows Central, Microsoft researched an Xbox controller that can be used as one device or split in half and attached to either side of your phone or tablet.
This research came about prior to Nintendo’s hybrid handheld, back in 2014, but Microsoft has reportedly gone back to it based on the Switch’s success.
It notes that touchscreen controls, especially when emulating buttons and joysticks, are often unsatisfactory. Dedicated handheld devices such as the DS and now Switch remain successful next to mobile devices largely due to their physical controls.
This is just research at this stage, but as Microsoft continues to look at improving mobile gaming through streaming, perhaps it’s not that far away from reality.
