“More than half” of Sea of Thieves players from Xbox Game Pass

Update: Microsoft had “no comment” when asked of SuperData’s numbers.

Original story: Sea of Thieves has an impressive user base, though “more than half” of those players are accessing the title though Xbox Game Pass, research firm SuperData reports.

Sea of Thieves had 1.7 million monthly active users on console and 283,000 on PC during its launch month,” the firm wrote in a recent report. “However – more than half of these users obtained the game through the limited free trial offered as part of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.”

It’s unclear how SuperData has obtained those numbers, and even more unclear as to how many Xbox Game Pass players are actual subscribers compared to those who used a 14-day “limited free trial” of the Xbox Game Pass model to play Sea of Thieves.

SuperData’s numbers seem to contradict Microsoft’s claim that Sea of Thieves had a player base of 2 million users without factoring in Xbox Game Pass.

Despite the discrepancy, it’ll be interesting to see how many players are continuing to play Sea of Thieves. With lacklustre reviews, grindy Achievements and a general lack of content, many players have been left wanting.

Sea of Thieves is available now on Windows PC and Xbox One. An Xbox Play Anywhere title available through Xbox Game Pass, developer Rare has detailed three big content drops to come.
