Gran Turismo 7 microtransactions addressed by Polyphony

"The pricing of cars is an important element that conveys their value and rarity."

Gran Turismo 7 microtransactions have been addressed in a new update from Polyphony Digital’s Kazunori Yamauchi.

Microtransactions were the focal point of the game’s 1.07 update, the one that essentially took the game offline for more than 24 hours.

Said update decreased the amount of in-game credits that users would earn by completing races, leading many users to believe the tactic was implemented to encourage the purchase of credits with real world money.

“In this update, some event rewards have been adjusted. I wanted to also explain the reasons for it and our plans going forward,” Yamauchi wrote. “In GT7 I would like to have users enjoy lots of cars and races even without microtransactions.

“At the same time the pricing of cars is an important element that conveys their value and rarity, so I do think it’s important for it to be linked with the real world prices.

“I want to make GT7 a game in which you can enjoy a variety of cars lots of different ways, and if possible would like to try to avoid a situation where a player must mechanically keep replaying certain events over and over again.”

It’s unclear how players will be able to purchase more expensive cars without grinding for in-game currency. Yamauchi added that ” we plan on continuing to revise GT7 so that as many players as possible can enjoy the game” and that he “would really appreciate it if everyone could watch over the growth of Gran Turismo 7 from a somewhat longer term point of view.”

As we’ve detailed previously, Gran Turismo 7 has dynamically priced cars through a partnership between developer Polyphony Digital and “automotive enthusiast brand” Hagerty.

Gran Turismo 7 is currently available on PS4 and PS5. We reviewed it here, saying “it’s a jumble of well-made car racing and strange design decisions, coupled with his tonally odd take on what it means to be a car nerd.”
