EA lays off more than 650, will focus on owned IP and sports

Even more layoffs.

EA is the latest video game entity to lay off staff, with more than 650 employees losing their jobs in this latest cull. The news comes at the same time EA said it will avoid licensed properties to instead focus on “owned IP, sports, and massive online communities”.

In a memo sent to staff, CEO Andrew Wilson said that the layoffs are a result of EA “streamlining our company operations to deliver deeper, more connected experiences for fans everywhere.” The cuts — which will impact approximately 5% of EA’s workforce — will be made by early next quarter.

In the memo, Wilson added that EA will focus on its “biggest opportunities — including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities.”

More than 7,000 layoffs have rocked the video games industry in the first two months of 2024 alone. Impacted developers and publishers over 2023 and 2024 include PlayStationMicrosoft, Deck Nine, Supermassive GamesDevolverEidos-MontrealRiot GamesThunderful Embracer and GearboxTwitch (again)UnityCodemasters505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft, Aussie studio League of GeeksVersus Evil and many more.
