Update 2: This issue looks to be making the rounds again. We’ve found a power cycle — unplugging your Xbox One from the wall, waiting two minutes and then plugging it back in again — did the trick, though you might also need to troubleshoot using some of the steps below. Good luck!

Update: Readers are reporting that this issue isn’t just occuring with Preview Program members. If you’ve encountered the error — and, more importantly, have a fix — sound off in the comments area below.

Original story: Members of the Xbox One Preview Program have today discovered its latest alpha ring update has rendered their consoles inoperable.

Insiders have taken to Microsoft’s forums to complain of widespread errors including update failures, issues connecting to Xbox live and, worst yet, the inability to open up apps or games.

The Stevivor office was impacted by the failure; both our in-office Xbox One and Xbox One S offered up a barrage of failure notices.

With the error above, we were able to select Skip & stay offline and then manually connect to Xbox Live afterwards. Sadly, games and apps wouldn’t open, instead throwing up error code 80270225A. None of the troubleshooting steps offered in Microsoft’s help page were able to correct the issue.

The Xbox One S was in a worse state, not even able to fully boot.

Cool. Both Xboxes are f*cking broken after the Alpha ring update.

A factory reset bought the console back to life, but it then began to throw up the same update failure message as seen on our first console. Games and apps won’t open either.

Is there a fix?

Yes and no. Some users are reporting the issue has disappeared after a while; others are suggesting that setting your console to “Instant On” mode will do the same. Sadly, our consoles are set to Instant On and weren’t operational after two hours of troubleshooting.

We fixed our own issues by continually trying to open the Xbox Insider Hub app, going into Settings and then removing our consoles from the program. We also went into the Hub on each console and downgraded from the Preview program to normal updates, though our consoles are still listed as “Pending” with that step. Nevertheless, that did the trick for us.

The Xbox Insider Hub currently says no issues are affecting the platform.
