Journey to the Savage Planet Science Experments guide

Journey to the Savage Planet is out now and this guide is all about completing the game’s Science Experiments.

While the Science Experiments are heaps of fun, they’re also needed to unlock pieces of gear — you’ll need to reach Science Level 4 to be able to craft every tool at your disposal. Here’s what’s involved in each level.

Science Level 2 Experiements

To get from Level 1 (Junior Explorer) to Level 2 (Field Explorer), complete the following:

  • Live Samples: Use the live sampler tool and interact with the following fauna:
    • Pufferbird: Found everywhere. Literally everywhere.
    • Baboushka: These are the dragon-like guys found in the valley just after the Outside the Javelin area.
    • Pikemander: These are the first predators you’ll encounter — check the Meteor Crater area.
  • Nuke It: Fill four creatures with a single Alpha Pufferbird detonation.
    • The easiest place to do this is with some Bait and Binding Bile at the Cliffs of Mt Gzarfyn area. Bait a bunch of Pufferbirds (and an Alpha) together, bind them, the shoot the Alpha.
  • Safety First: Fall 50 metres and save yourself with Jump Thrusters.
    • You can do this virtually anywhere as well.
  • Flight Risk: Kill 5 ground creatures while they are airborne
    • I did this by getting behind a Pufferbird, kicking it and then shooting it as it was in the air.
  • Scan at least 25% of the planet’s ecosystem
    • Hit up on your d-pad and scan anything that displays as orange/yellow.

Science Level 2 Experiements

You’ll need to do these to get to Level 3 (Explorer).

  • Live Samples: Use the live sampler tool and interact with the following fauna:
    • Kapyena: These look like dogs and are first found in the Fungi of Si’ned VII area.
    • Jellywaft: These are the airborne jellyfish; look for them at Towering Crystals.
    • Infected Pufferbird: These are the zombie Pufferbirds — look in the caves near the Festering Chasm.
  • Corrosive Rain: Hit 2 creatures with the acid burst from a single dying Prime Jellywaft.
    • This is easiest done in Planetary Flotsam — wait for a bunch of Jellywaft to group up and shoot the red/pink one to cause it to explode.
  • Easy Target: Kill 4 creatures while they are stuck in Binding Bile within 3 seconds.
    • I did this at the Fungi of Si-ned VII area. Find the armoured Pufferbirds, then bait them to group them. Throw blight bombs to remove their armour, then throw binding bile to trap them. Finally, throw a Bombegranate at them to blow ’em all up at once.
  • Bomb Drop: Kill 3 amber-armored Pufferbirds with a single Bombegranate.
    • See the tip for Easy Target, above. Works like a treat.
  • Scan at least 50% of the planet’s ecosystem
    • Hit up on your d-pad and scan anything that displays as orange/yellow.

Science Level 3 Experiements

You’ll need to do these to get to Level 4 (Senior Executive Explorer).

  • Live Samples: Use the live sampler tool and interact with the following fauna:
    • Slamphibian: Go to the Slamphibian Pit area for this one (duh).
    • Schnozo: These are the whack-a-moles near Elevated Realm.
    • Imperial Scarab: These are the electrical armoured things near Xerophilous Landing.
  • Let’s Bounce: Kill 5 creatures with a single Charge Shot.
    • First, upgrade your gun to the Bounce Bomb level — that’ll let you hit Y to power-up your shot a total of three times. Head to the Outside the Javelin area and then move beyond the first cave to an open area. Head to the left and you’ll find 4 Pufferbirds and an Alpha. Bait them all together, then use a Shock Fruit (get those at Pillars of Xzorgana if you need them) to shock them all, then shoot your charged shot. You’ll get this and Shocking (see below) too.
  • Shocking: Kill 4 creatures while they are shocked by lightning within 3 seconds
    • See Let’s Bounce, above.
  • I Know Karate: Kill 10 creatures in a row using only melee attacks and without getting hurt.
    • I went to the very first cave in the Outside the Javelin area — there are four Pufferbirds that will constantly respawn. Kick/melee one at a time and if they don’t immediately die, they’ll come back and try to rush you. Hit them with melee again before they can hit you and that will count for 1 kill. Rinse, repeat (and don’t worry about getting green goo on you as that doesn’t count as getting hurt).
  • Scan at least 75% of the planet’s ecosystem
    • Hit up on your d-pad and scan anything that displays as orange/yellow.

That’s it — congratulations; you’re done! Go find some resources and Alien Alloys and you’ll have all the upgrades and tools in no time at all.

Journey to the Savage Planet is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4; we reviewed the game here and spoke with Aussie Alex Hutchinson about it here.
