Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene on how vaulting will change PUBG

With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds gearing up to publicly test its 1.0 build, Stevivor caught up with Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene to talk about the big changes coming to the game.

The introduction of vaulting is a mechanic which is going to be a big evolution to the way the game is going to be played. How exactly this will change the meta, though, Greene is unsure of yet.

“Oh god I have no idea,” Greene said. “It’s going to add so much verticality to the game. It’s going to add this level of accessibility we haven’t had before.

“I think it’s going to change the game in a good way. People have shown that they love finding inventive ways to kill people in our game. This is just going to add to that, it’s going to add to the tactical knowledge you need. You’re going to have to look up on buildings and kind of look around a lot more. I think it is going to be interesting.”

Currently when jumping through windows you’re able to do this without having to break the glass on the window first, and when doing so the window glass also stays intact – allowing for a quick and silent escape. The vaulting mechanic will also be a fix for this as Greene mentions.

“You’ll be breaking the windows as you jump through,” Greene says. “There are some buildings that have bars on the windows which we may look at removing those bars going forward.

“We just don’t have time to do these little small tweaks, we just want to get the vaulting system in first and then see where it takes us.”

Apart from the vaulting being introduced in the 1.0 build, Greene is also looking forward to players getting to the chance to check out what else is heading to the big update, including the 3D replay system.

“I think that is going to be incredibly good for content creators. Just because you’re going to be able to watch your matches back in your own game,” Greene says with excitement. “I also think with our custom game system we’ll really get a chance to polish that off. With our build internally we are working on optimisations for the client and server.

“We can’t push it to our main servers because it’s still too broken, and we can’t work on two builds either. So our live server build is running Unreal Engine 4.14, and our internal 1.0 build is running Unreal Engine 4.16. And we just can’t maintain the 4.14 branch, but we can’t update to the 4.16 build because it’s so broken right now.”

As Greene mentioned above they are having some issues with the latest build, which has delayed the launch of the public test build. Hopefully eager players won’t have to wait too long to get an early look at the next update.

PUBG, or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, is currently available on Windows PC. It heads to Xbox One on 12 December.
