E3 2015 Preview: Xbox One to Windows 10 PC streaming

I’ve not only seen the Xbox One streaming to a Windows 10 tablet at E3, I’ve gone home (of sorts; I’m visiting my parents’ house/the one I spent 19 years growing up in) and done it myself.

It’s pretty damn simple — you turn on your Xbox One, open up the Xbox app on your Windows 10 (or Win 10 preview) device and then hit two buttons: Connect, then Stream. The only caveat to it all is that both devices need to use the same local network connection.

Apart from that, it works perfectly. I took my Windows 10 device all around my parents’ house. Upstairs. Downstairs. Even in the backyard… but nowhere in my nightgown. My parents have a ten year old router sitting in their concrete-lined basement, and it still worked without hassle.

Luddite me didn’t notice any lag, but I don’t notice it on a TV when playing Wii U or Xbox 360 through my Xbox One’s HDMI In input either. If you do and it concerns you, I guess it’s best to give this functionality a go yourself instead of taking my word.

Walking around with my laptop and a cabled Xbox One controller was a bit of a pain, but the experience is really designed to be used at a stationary place. Its primary purpose is to swap out a TV screen for a computer monitor ‘cause your significant other wants to watch The Real Housewives of Melbourne. Soon, you’ll be able to strap on some headphones, grab your Surface, plug in your Xbox One wireless dongle and be ready to roll. Goodbye, Housewives and hello, Halo.

Streaming from Xbox One to a Windows 10 device is currently open to those in both the Xbox One and Windows Preview Programs. Streaming only works from Xbox One to Windows 10 and not the other way around.
