SteamWorld Build’s Thunderful lays off approx 100 employees

Or 20% of its workforce.

SteamWorld Build developer Thunderful Group has laid off approximately 100 employees, or 20% of its workforce.

“Since I joined as CEO in the fall of 2023, we have evaluated the current business and the future position of Thunderful,” CEO Martin Walfisz told GamesIndustry. “To ensure and strengthen the viability of the group, we have found no alternative other than to reduce costs and focus the business on areas with the best future growth and profitability prospects.”

Walfisz expressed his sadness over the layoffs.

“It has been difficult to make these decisions, and it saddens me that we will have to say goodbye to many skilled colleagues and partners,” he continued. “Nevertheless, I am convinced that this is a necessary direction for Thunderful and that these changes will make the company a stronger player in the market.”

As we’ve reported, an estimated 10,000 layoffs have rocked the gaming industry of late, impacing developers and publishers including Codemasters505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft, Aussie studio League of GeeksVersus Evil and many more.

Layoffs reported in 2024 have included the likes of Embracer and Gearbox, Twitch (again), and Unity.
