New tax rebate now available for Queensland game developers

Great news for our friends up in the north.

Game developers in Queensland are now eligible for a 15% tax rebate that’s come into effect as part of an existing incentive scheme.

As we were reminded by GamesHub, the Queensland Government announced that game developers would be included in the Post-Production, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) offset back in October of last year. Today, the 15% rebate attached to that has come into effect.

“By adding this new games’ incentive, local and international studios will be further motivated to outsource the creation of valuable game titles to Queensland, while our own locally based developers will be supported to create original games content right here,” Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said at the time of her initial announcement.

“My government has also moved to lower the threshold on access to the PDV and games incentive from $500,000 to $250,000, a substantial boost to local post-production businesses pitching for a broad range of projects,” Palaszczuk continued.

Queensland’s 15% offset with a $250,000 AUD threshold follows New South Wales’ 10% offset with a $500,000 AUD threshold and South Australia’s 10% offset with a $250,000 AUD threshold.

“Queensland has a history of developing world-renowned video games and is home to some amazing and well-known game development studios such as Gameloft, Witch Beam [which developed Unpacking, seen above], Halfbrick, 5 Lives Studios, Disparity Games and Toast VR,” IGEA’s Ron Curry said of the incentive.

“This new game incentive, coupled with the Federal Digital Games Tax Offset to be introduced in July 2022, will ensure that Queensland will see a surge in employment and economic return for those companies creating games and game related technologies. Further to that, we expect to see increased investment from international game studios looking to establish a base in Australia,” Curry continued.

Those eligible for the rebate can apply using the Screen Queensland website.
