Without detailing the actual price of Sony’s next-gen console, likely to be named the PS5, Mark Cerny has told Wired he thinks the price will be fair for what’s on offer.
“I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers,” Cerny told Wired’s Peter Rubin, “in light of its advanced feature set.”
It’s a bit of a bittersweet statement — Cerny specifically clarifies that the price is fair considering the PS5 will include functionality like 8K resolution support and PS4 backwards compatibility.
His statement has many on Reddit believing the console price will start at $500 USD, which could align the price of the PS5 with the original cost of the PS3 at $499 USD (20 GB) or $599 (60 GB). Here in Australia, the original PS3 cost a whopping $829 AUD (20 GB) or $999 AUD (60 GB).
Sony’s being a bit coy with the reveal of what it calls its next-gen console. Not officially named the PS5 as yet, we do know that the console won’t be available in 2019.
