Blizzard cancels Overwatch Switch launch event without reason

Blizzard has abruptly cancelled an Overwatch Switch launch event that was to be held at Nintendo New York, Nintendo has recently advised.

“Please be aware that the previously announced Overwatch launch event scheduled for Wednesday at NintendoNYC has been cancelled by Blizzard. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the Nintendo New York Twitter account confirmed.

At the time of writing, no reason for the cancellation has been given by Blizzard.

This is the latest in a string of events plaguing Blizzard, with most focussed on the publisher’s decision to ban professional Hearthstone player blitzchung as a result of a call to liberate Hong Kong after a livestreamed match he took part in. Blizzard has since lessened the player’s suspension, though hasn’t punished a team from American University for making a similar statement; the AU Gamers team has self-imposed punishment as a result.

Speaking out after the move, Blizzard’s J. Allen Brack insists that “China had no influence” on the company’s actions.

Finally, Blizzard was also caught up in controversy after a LGBTQ World of Warcraft Classic guild named GAY BOYS had its name briefly changed after complaints from players the guild considers homophobic.

Anyway, Overwatch heads to Nintendo Switch today. Enjoy!
