Battlefield’s Lars Gustavsson to leave DICE after more than 20 years

It's the end of an era.

Battlefield Creative Director Lars Gustavsson will leave DICE after more than 20 years of service, it has recently been announced.

Gustavsson’s departure from the company was announced by Battlefield General Manager, Bryon Beede, in a new blog post.

“Lars Gustavsson, who has been with the franchise since the beginning and is affectionately known as Mr Battlefield, has decided he is ready for a new adventure,” Beede advised. “Lars has dedicated a substantial portion of his life to Battlefield and is proud to have helped shape the franchise into what it is today. He is excited to pass the baton to the next generation of Battlefield creators at DICE, Ripple Effect, Industrial Toys, and Ridgeline Games.”

Filling the void following Gustavsson’s depature will be a new leadership team consisting of Battlefield franchise head Vince Zampella, DICE’s Rebecka Coutaz, Christrian Grass of Ripple Effect Studios and Alex Seropian at Industrial Toys. The four will be “coordinating multiple studios… to build a connected Battlefield universe” following the poor reception received by Battlefield 2042 at launch.

One of those studios is the newly announced Ridgeline Games, helmed by Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto.

“Marcus will bring his long legacy of creating fascinating worlds and gripping narratives to Battlefield,” Beede continued. “Backed by a world-class team, he’ll be leading the charge to develop a narrative campaign set in the Battlefield universe that will engage fans in new and exciting ways while remaining true to the classic elements of the series.”

Our best wishes go out to Mr. Gustavsson — we wish you much success with your next endeavour.
