Battlefield 5 Tides of War system will release new content instead of Premium Pass

Rather than locking content behind a Premium Pass, Battlefield 5 will instead release content to every single player as part of a new system called The Tides of War.

“Tides of War is DICE’s new approach to live services, where players will set out on an epic journey with their Company in unexpected battles throughout World War 2,” EA advised in a press release.

“There will be no premium pass, all players will have access to the same maps and modes, keeping the community unified as they progress through Battlefield V. In Tides of War, their journey through World War 2 will grow through themed experiences that will include events and all-new ways to play like Grand Operations, while also unlocking the latest themed rewards such as weapons and vehicles to further shape their Company.”

DICE’s Ryan McArthur says the new system will help players to get a feel of what World War II was really like.

“At its heart, what we really want people to experience is the greatest drama in human history,” he said. “To really experience World War II first-hand. We want to expand that journey over time. We’re going to start with the fall of Europe and really explore what World War II was like.

“We want players to understand what that location really meant; it’s impact on World War II.”

The delivery method will tie new content with narrative storytelling in an attempt to increase immersion.

“We want to change the meta of the sandbox,” McArthur continued. “What does Battlefield field like when you open up paratroopers to the entire experience?”

From what we learned at today’s briefing, The Tides of War will work under a planned schedule, releasing new chapters that will “take players on a journey every few months”, according to McArthur. The system will let DICE “take the time to tell these stories the war has.

Concept art of in-game menus suggested that chapters will be broken up into weekly content, adding new campaigns and the potential to unlock things like new Legendary items in Battlefield 5.

Each Tide of War events will have thematic rewards, including vehicles, weapons, dog tags, emblems, face paint, soldier skins and weapon skins. As examples, McArthur said players could earn the powerful Tiger tank and its special winter skin for completion of a newly-released campaign.

Battlefield 5 heads to Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4 between 11-19 October.
