Avengers adds paid XP boosts, going against Crystal Dynamics’ word

Would Captain America be okay with this decision? We think not.

Avengers has introduced paid XP boosts, going against Crystal Dynamics’ word that any in-game microtransactions would be cosmetic only.

The boosts come in the form of consumables, which in turn can increase the rate at which a player earns XP or gathers in-game resources.

The move goes against a stance taken by the game’s developer ahead of launch. Back in June 2019, Crystal Dynamics said that, “there will be custom outfits that you can purchase in microtransactions,” and “there are other aesthetic ways to customize your player card and your player experience, but there is nothing that affects the gameplay.”

At E3 2019, Crystal Dynamics doubled down, saying, “our promise to the community is that we won’t have random loot boxes or pay-to-win scenarios.”

Making matters worse, Crystal Dynamics advised it was slowing down the rate at which players could earn XP and level up back in March 2021.

Needless to say, players aren’t happy about the combination of tactics used.

“As a huge comic fan, gamer, and Avengers lover, this game should have been everything I could have hoped for,” wrote Garlador. “Instead, it mutated into everything I despise about modern gaming.

“What a waste of such incredibly talented developers, a robust and amazing IP, and the goodwill of gamers who still are waiting for a great Avengers game.”

In November 2020, Square Enix stated that Avengers had yet to turn a profit; the game launched in September of that same year.

Avengers is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S & X, PS4, PS5 and Stadia. It’s also part of Xbox Game Pass.
