Insomniac Games disappointed by Spider-Man story leaks

Not only did we recently get the chance to check out the first few hours of Marvel’s Spider-Manwhich looks AMAZING — but we also managed to sit down and chat with James Stevenson, Community Director at Insomniac Games.

At this past E3 we found out that Spider-Man will be facing off against the Sinister Six, but everyone was left hanging for more after the demo cut just before showing who the leader of the group is. Insomniac wanted players to experience this in-game and find out for themselves. A week later, however, some details leaked out about who the possible sixth member of the group could be. So how do the developers feel when stuff like this happens?

“What I would say is that I hope people don’t go looking for leaks,” Stevenson said.

“The Spider-Man PS4 Reddit – just stay away, stay away! Don’t even go there now, there is just too much stuff,” he added, laughing.

“We have had secrets in this game and things that we decided consciously that we were never going to ever reveal. We had hoped that most people, whether it was people previewing it, reviewing the game, or playing it at home – would never have seen or heard from us about these things until they actually got to experience it. I think that is kind of the fun of it, whether you are seeing a Marvel movie, or reading a Marvel comic – you have these reveals and events that happen and so it’s such a huge game for us that we are able to carve out certain parts to surprise people. Some of it is very early too, within the first hour of the game, things that are going to surprise players.”

In the end, Stevenson acknowledged that fans are excited about the upcoming game and “want to talk about it” but that Insomniac is putting “a lot of effort into having surprises… and holding things back so that it wouldn’t be like [fans have] already seen everything.

“It is disappointing when someone spoils a secret that has been kept for over three years, and it’s disappointing when people intentionally try to spoil it for other people,” he said.

“I think you’ll see us try to ask people not to spoil things for others until they’ve had the chance to play it. There will be a lot of stuff that you’ve never seen before.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man is due for release 7 September, exclusive to PS4.
