Preview: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Super Mario 3D World fans delighted at this week’s news of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. A spinoff game focusing on the side missions from 3D World itself, Captain Toad features the titular character exploring Fez-like isometric view levels in chase of loot.

We played the first two chapters of the game, with one looking very much like the 3D World side missions, and the other an on-rails event where Toad was tasked to throw turnips at jewels in order to snare them. In the second chapter, the GamePad was used to look around the level whilst on the rails, and the Pad’s face buttons launched turnips. In the normal side levels, the GamePad’s right stick rotates the world around so you can progress and explore.

Toad can’t jump, but really doesn’t need to. He simply needs to evade obstacles, rotate the world to see where he’s going, solve some basic environmental puzzles and continue on. A single Goomba threatened me at one point, and I had to use the stylus to shift the level around to Toad fell onto the baddie. In the minecart level, a strategically thrown turnip can use a POW block to take out several enemies or grab treasure far more effectively. There’s not much to it.

There doesn’t have to really be that much more to it, as Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a download-only title coming to the Wii U later this year.
