Will the PlayStation 4 stream PS3 games?

The Wall Street Journal are reporting that sources close to Sony have confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will stream PlayStation 3 games over the Internet. The services will be paired with traditional optical media sold through retail.

The rumoured cloud service would rely heavily on streaming company Gaikai, whom Sony acquired for $380 million last year. Sony have become less inclined to offer backwards compatibility in recent years, first removing PS2 compatibility from the PS3 and then releasing HD re-releases rather than direct ports digitally or physically. The PS4 is rumoured to be much more PC like in order to make it easier for developers to work with and if the hardware is significantly different from the PS3, streaming games may be the most viable option.

All will be revealed when Sony (presumably) reveal their new console 20 February (21st at 10:00am AEDT).
