How 343 managed to lock Halo 5 at 60fps

Halo 5: Guardians is out and in players’ hands and thanks to some tricky engineering by 343 its framerate remains rock-solid at 60fps throughout.

Digital Foundry has analysed Halo 5 and discovered that the developers have cleverly used a scaling resolution system to maintain the framerate. The post accopanying the video below states that “hitting 1080p while maintaining 60fps would not have been possible in Halo 5, but rather than simply opting to render at a low resolution across the board, 343 has implemented one of the most impressive dynamic resolution scaling systems we’ve seen to date.”

Digital Foundry discovered that, on the fly, Halo 5 adjusts the resolution so as to never compromise the framerate. It found resolutions of 1152×810, 1168×810, 1440×840, 1344×972, and 1536×1080 arbitrarily applied as the title worked to ensure silky smooth performance.

Halo 5: Guardians is available exclusively for Xbox One. You can read our thoughts here.
