Fable Legends goes free-to-play on Xbox One, Windows 10

Microsoft and Lionhead Studios today announced that the upcoming Fable Legends will be offered as a free-to-play title on both Xbox One and Windows 10.

As part of the its new free-to-play model, Fable Legends will feature a rotating cast of Albion heroes. Each of the heroes on offer at one time will correspond to each of the game’s four classes. After a set time, the heroes will be rotated out and players can decide if they’d like to purchase the departing folk with real money or in-game currency. Progress with each hero will be saved regardless of purchase, so you don’t need to make up your mind right there on the spot.

In terms of villainous gameplay, the free-to-play model will have players use real money or in-game currency to access traps and creatures not normally available on a set map.

For those worried about the pay-to-win model that can arise from free-to-play, Lionhead Studios asserted that microtransactions are option and pay-to-win “won’t be a concern”. Lionhead added that everything that can be bought in the game can also be earned with in-game efforts.

We’ve previewed the title, which pits four heroes against one villain, at least year’s E3. A release date for the game has not yet been named, but it’s expected in 2015 alongside the launch of Windows 10. The game will allow for cross-play between Xbox One and Windows 10.
