Preview: SoulCalibur V

SoulCalibur has always had the reputation as being one of the most visually stunning and fluid fighting games on the scene. I went hands on with Namco’s latest demo of SoulCalibur V and it looks like not only will it be upholding this tradition but it will also throw a few new features in to shake things up.

The latest build that I played featured 8 — though there was space for at least 40 — already announced characters. Some were completely new to the series, and others defied the logic of time and returned from previous releases. Namco never fails to impress with just how amazingly detailed the characters look and move in this series. Just when you think they’ve reached the point where they can’t get possibly look any better, they seem to be able to squeeze just that little bit of extra polish that makes all the difference.

The revered fighting system returns in all its glory. Blocking, parrying, throws and combos are all still there just as you remember them, but that’s not to say there haven’t been any improvements. In fact one of the best things about SCV is its new additions to combat. Taking a cue from Street Fighter, SoulCalibur V has implemented a meter that charges as you fight or take damage. Once enough of the meter has significantly charged players can unleash devastating moves that can quickly turn the tide of a match.

Like previous releases in the series SoulCalibur V is a title that comes across as easy to pick up and difficult to master. You could spend hours with these characters not because of their alluring good looks, well not just because of, but also because mastering them is so rewarding when you’re knocking shoulders with fellow fighters.

Though it’s early days, if this is any indication it’s off to an incredible start. SoulCalibur V is due to slash its way onto consoles early 2012.
