Review: Nutty Fluffies

RedLynx, the brains behind the ever-popular Trials series, are back with Nutty Fluffies on iOS. Aside from the shocking awful name, the game as a lot more in common with Trials than you might think. Set in a theme park, you control sentient stuffed animals as they ride rollercoasters after-hours.

At least the weirdness of the premise matches the game’s title, eh?

When playing, you start off merely controlling the rollercoaster carts on the track; swiping to the right on your screen speeds the carts up, and swiping to the left slows them down. Going too fast up a ramp means you’ll fly off it, usually spilling the contents of your railcarts all over the track, meaning you’ll fail and have to try again. You’re also tasked with collection hearts on and above the track, so you’ll have to take risks now and again.

The game is easy to learn and hard to master, like Trials, but unlike its cousin, gets old very quick. Hearts earn coins, which in turn unlock new courses to play through; to unlock enough coins, you’ll be playing the same track over and over again.

The game’s free-to-play formula wears thin quickly. Not only do new courses cost coins to unlock, but you have to use hard-earned coins to man railcarts with different fluffy animals for each run you make… meaning you’ll always be low on coins. To counter that, you can use real money to buy in-game coins, or you can connect to Facebook for free coins. I wasn’t about to use either of those methods, so I quickly got sick of the game constantly asking me to connect to Facebook so it could spam my friends with notifications in return for a coin or two. In the end, I also had to turn off push notifications for the game on my phone, because I was sick of it slamming me with iOS Home screen requests to play again for a couple free coins.

In short, Nutty Fluffies is a fun little free diversion, but it’s not one that I’d be prepared to drop money on. For maximum enjoyment, turn notifications off and jump in once and again for a couple runs on a track.
