Preview: Inversion

Saber Interactive’s Inversion has been in development for what could only seem like an eternity. Originally estimated for its debut in 2010 Inversion was delayed in order to bring the title up to scratch. At a recent event at Namco Bandai headquarters in Sydney we had the opportunity to go hands on with the latest demo code. The extra development time has made all the difference.

Inversion uses a similar control scheme to Gears of War – like most third person shooters these days. And takes place in a post apocalyptic world – also like most third person shooters these days. But if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

What is different and the primary calling card of this title is the use or misuse of gravity as a gameplay mechanic. Using a weapon called the Gravlink device you can increase or decrease the gravity of objects or enemies on the battlefield. This makes for some incredibly dynamic gameplay.

The code we went hands on with let us play one level from the campaign and a quick match of the multiplayer feature. Being able to manipulate gravity around your enemies causing to them to float uncontrollably is incredibly fun and using it to also manipulate your surroundings for cover is something not seen before in this genre giving something new to players to master.

While we only had a short time with Inversion there’s clearly something about this title that’s special which for a new IP is a must have. Thanks to its extra development time it’s looking more promising than ever and it’s going to be a title to watch for. Inversion is currently slated for a February 10, 2012 release date.
