E3 2015 Preview: Project X Zone 2

I had no idea what was going on most of the time in Project X Zone 2, but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy my time playing it.

Going hands-on with the title at E3, I found myself clutching a 3DS without anyone around to ask questions to. So, I jumped on in.

My screen displayed a top-down chess board of sorts, with iconic characters awaiting my command. As I moved Street Fighter‘s Ryu towards an evil-looking character, we were teleported to a side view and a classic 2v2 fight began.

The baddie had a helper, but I did too; Ryu was joined by Ken, and together, we beat them down. I essentially mashed the 3DS’ face buttons, and my two heroes went ballistic, using their classic moves until a timer counted down to zero. If we took down the baddies’ collective health bar, we celebrated. If we didn’t quite get there, we didn’t lose heart; we’d get there next time.

I then essentially repeated the same thing over and over and over, albeit with different character couplings. In my time with the game, I used characters from Tekken, Mega Man XResident Evil, Streets of Rage and several others I’d admittedly have to look up. Still, it’s quite obvious that this team-up title wants to deliver fan service, and it does it in spades.

Eventually, my teams mopped up the map, and I progressed to a new level, tasked to do it again.

All up Project X Zone 2 wasn’t the most complex of games, but offered up myriad of familiar places and a tight little gameplay loop that’ll make it perfect for the 3DS and short little spurts of gameplay on the train or wherever else you may be.

Project X Zone 2 will be available on Nintendo 3DS later this year.
