What does the future hold for Resident Evil?

In a 10-minute video interview with Game Informer Resident Evil Revelation 2 Producer Michiteru Okabe and Resident Evil HD Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi discussed the future of Resident Evil and in particular if the series could become annualised.

Okabe — speaking through a translator — said “I wouldn’t be surprised if you saw the game settling into that sort of cadence eventually in the future,” referring to an annual installment in the franchise, but qualified it saying, “I don’t think we will see a change to the really big scale mainline games. I think once every three to five years probably makes sense for those, due to their scale and production schedules. I think by having spin-off series and some other elements we may eventually be able to annualise.”

Okabe is also acutely aware of the dilemma Resident Evil faces. The series needs to remain on gamers’ radar but without “brand fatigue” setting in. “There are only so many games people want to buy. It gets really complicated during periods like this when we are kinda between generations and cellphones are really taking off. The key is going to be in keeping in really close communication with the fans and finding out what they want and delivering that to them,” Okabe said.

No information was given about Resident Evil 7, though Hirabayashi stated he’d like to recreate the Arklay mansion for use with Oculus Rift.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 and Resident Evil HD will be available in 2015.
