Unity layoffs to impact 1,800 employees

Yikes.

Unity layoffs will cut 1,800 positions, of 25% of its total workforce, a report from Yahoo! Finance states.

According to the outlet, Unity sent out an internal memo on 8 January detailing the layoffs, the fourth round of layoffs at Unity since July 2022. Cuts are expected across all departments of the business.

“We are … reducing the number of things we are doing in order to focus on our core business and drive our long-term success and profitability,” interim CEO Jim Whitehurst wrote in the memo.

This news follows a turbulent time at Unity; back in September 2023, the company announced a drastic change to its licensing structure whereby developers using its engine would be required to pay per game installation. Unity backflipped on the change later that same month, though not without cost — CEO John Riccitiello stepped down from his role in October.

According to Yahoo!, Unity shares were up close to 5% in after-hours trading following news of the layoffs themselves.

Layoffs are impacting the video game industry to a tremendous extent. We’ve sadly had to report of layoffs at developers and publishers including Codemasters505 Games’ Digital BrosAmazonBungieMedia MoleculeUbisoft, Aussie studio League of Geeks, Versus Evil and many more.
