Ubisoft Paris employees asked to strike following CEO comments

Solidaires Informatique has accused Yves Guillemot of shifting blame.

Workers union Solidaires Informatique has called for those at Ubisoft Paris to strike in response to comments made by CEO Yves Guillemot.

In a statement to employees, Guillemot said that “the ball was in [employees’] court” following a financial results call that also announced another delay to Skull & Bones and the cancellation of three unannounced games.

“Today more than ever, I need your full energy and commitment to ensure we get back on the path to success,” Guillemot wrote in an email (via Eurogamer).

“I am also asking that each of you be especially careful and strategic with your spending and initiatives, to ensure we’re being as efficient and lean as possible,” Guillemot continued. “The ball is in your court to deliver this line-up on time and at the expected level of quality, and show everyone what we are capable of achieving.”

In response, Solidaires Informatique said that Guillemot was attempting to “shift the blame (once again) onto the employees”.

“If the request to employees to be be ‘especially careful and strategic with your spending’ is supposed to be ironic considering the company’s editorial strategy of the last few years, it is not funny,” the union wrote. “When Mr. Guillemot speaks of ‘attrition’ and organisational adjustments’, it means: staff reductions, discreet studio closures, salary cuts, disguised layouts, etc.”

The union has called for employees at Ubisoft Paris to strike on 27 January, between 2 pm to 6pm local time, in response.
