The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered planned for January 2024

Already have it on PS4? You'll have to pay a small upgrade for its PS5 equivalent.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was detailed by Sony this weekend, planned for a January 2024 release.

The remastered version of the 2020 original will feature “technological improvements, new modes, and new behind-the-scenes features that will deepen your understanding of Part II’s creation,” according to Sony. Some of that latter content will come in the form of new director’s commentary from director Neil Druckmann, narrative lead Halley Gross, and actors Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson, and Laura Bailey.

Part 2 Remastered will allow for 4K gaming in Fidelity mode, 1400p upscaled to 4K gameplay in Performance mode, and an Unlocked Framerate option that works with displays that support variable refresh rate (VRR). DualSense haptic feedback will also be incorportated into the release.

Finally, a new mode called No Return, described by Sony as “a roguelike survival mode” will be available.

“The mode includes a host of playable characters to choose from – some playable for the first time in The Last of Us franchise… who each come with their own traits to suit different playstyles,” Sony advised. “Players will chart their own course on each run, choosing between various stealth and combat encounters that will pit you against a range of enemies, with unique twists that can add new, unexpected factors to any given encounter.”

With the new features comes a new price tag. Those who already have purchased The Last of Us Part 2 on PS4 will be able to upgrade to Part 2 Remastered on PS5 for $10 USD. We’re working to confirm Australian pricing details now, including the price of the title for those new to Part 2 in either form. Pre-orders for the title will go live on 5 December, so we’ll be able to confirm local pricing then at the very least.

Those with a disc copy of the PS4 title will be able to upgrade, Sony has confirmed, though you’ll need a PS5 with a disc drive to do so. Sony affirmed this, saying, “owners of PS4 disc copies must insert them into the PS5 every time they want to download or play the PS5 digital version.”

If you’ve got the PS4 version of the title, you’ll also be able to import your saves from Part 2 into Part 2 Remastered. The new title will offer up a new Platinum Trophy, so that’s an easy get for those of us with a save still present.

Expect The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PS5 from 19 January 2024. We reviewed the 2020 original here, saying “when looking at gameplay it’s best in class, but a host of design and narrative decisions truly bring it down.”
