The FTC is investigating Sony’s acquisition of Bungie

An "in-depth investigation" is underway, says a report.

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is in the middle of an “in-depth investigation” into Sony’s acquisition of Bungie, a new report from The Information suggests.

The outlet says the FTC’s investigation started near the end of April and is concerned with the possibility that Sony will make Bungie’s titles, including the popular Destiny franchise, console-exclusives on PlayStation.

PC Gamer rightfully notes that a similar investigation wasn’t conducted when Microsoft spent $7.5 billion USD to acquire Bethesda, though it’s believed this new scrutiny is a result of US President Joe Biden’s executive order that tasked the FTC to enforce antitrust laws “fairly and vigorously”.

Sony announced its plans to acquire Bungie for $3.6 billion USD back in February of this year. At the time, Bungie’s Pete Parsons said that “we have found a partner who unconditionally supports us in all we are and who wants to accelerate our vision to create generation-spanning entertainment, all while preserving the creative independence that beats in Bungie’s heart.”

This FTC investigation could delay the deal by six months, experts predict.

We’ll have more on the acquisition as it’s made avaliable.
