Sony starts PlayStation game preservation team

Yes, please.

Sony has quietly started up a PlayStation game preservation team.

According to posts spotted by VGC, there’s at least one engineer in the new team: Garrett Fredley, formerly of mobile studio Kabam.

“Today is my first day as a Senior Build Engineer at [PlayStation], working as one of their initial hires for the newly created Preservation team,” Fredley wrote.

“Game Preservation was my first career passion, so I’m ecstatic that I get to go back to those roots,” Fredley continued. “Let’s go and ensure our industry’s history isn’t forgotten!”

It’s not yet known what Fredley and the team he’s in are working on, but fans are hopeful it will focus on the restoration and preservation of old PlayStation and PlayStation 2 (PS2) titles at the very least. Some of those very games will be accessible to players thanks to the newly tiered PlayStation Plus subscription program, which is due in Australia near the end of June.

We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
