Sony likely remastering 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn

Um, okay?

Sony is likely remastering 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn for the PS5, a new ESRB listing has potentially revealed.

The listing says just that — “Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered” — alongside a familiar description of the game.

“This is an action/role-playing game in which players assume the role of a hunter (Aloy) surviving through a post-apocalyptic world,” it reads. “Players guide Aloy as she learns to hunt robotic creatures and animals in the wild. Aloy uses arrows, spears, and explosive traps to injure and kill machines, boar, and occasional human enemies.”

Alongside its PS4 edition in 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn was also released to the PC in 2020. Horizon Zero Dawn was also part of PlayStation Plus Extra, but was pulled from the catalogue back in May 2024.

The reaction to the potential news hasn’t gone over too well on Reddit.

“[It’s a] Generation of remakes and remasters,” wrote one.

“And Bloodborne is still 30 fps on PS5 lol,” said another.

“But…why? This game already looks and runs so well on PS5, by all accounts it technically is a remaster,” asked another. “Why not make another DLC to pass the time?”

I called the title “a decent copycat” when I reviewed it back in 2017.

“Once you see through its flash, Zero Dawn comes off a bit tired, rehashing concepts you’ve seen before,” I wrote.

“Its true failing is its everything but the kitchen sink mentality; if a little focus was applied, this would have been spectacular, not merely satisfactory. That’s said, let’s not mourn what could have been — just yet, anyway — and celebrate what is a decent groundwork for something bigger and better to come.”

Horizon Zero Dawn is currently available on Windows PC and PS4. It’s, of course, backwards compatible on PS5.
