Sony to require limited-time trials for games $34 USD or more

More work for developers means an additional treat for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

A new report alleges that Sony will require developers to provide limited-time demos of games priced $34 USD or more.

Sony’s intent would mean that PlayStation Plus Premium — or Deluxe, in the case of Australia — would have access to a limited-time demo of any major title as part of their subscription tier.

Sources speaking with GameDeveloper say that the trials would need to be at least two hours long, and that developers also have the flexibility to offer up specialised demos rather than a two-hour chunk. Developers will also have three months from the time of a title’s release to offer up such a limited-time demo.

In an email sent to Australian subscribers today, Sony said that PlayStation Plus Deluxe would offer such demos.

“Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy,” the email reads.

What do yo make of this alleged decision by Sony? Is it good for consumers, bad for developers, or something entirely? Sound off in the comments section, below.

The new, tiered PlayStation Plus subscription system kicks off in Australia from 22 June.
