Rainbow Six Siege could go free-to-play if its developers have their way.
Speaking with PC Gamer, Game Director Leroy Athanassoff said that items like smurfing — whereby experienced players create an alternate account to then go up against (and dominate) inexperienced ones — need to be addressed before a free-to-play model can be entertained.
“You need certain features ready to be a good and successful free-to-play game,” he said. “What’s important for us is that we find out as soon as possible that a player is highly skilled in the things that matter. The problem right now is that you can play a certain amount of matches with Copper players while you’re a Diamond.”
Ultimately, Athanassoff stressed that the final decision is with Ubisoft itself.
“It’s a company decision,” he continued. “I think on the development team we want that at some point. We want the game to be accessible to everyone.”
Rainbow Six: Siege is currently available on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
