PlayStation Portal Australian price set at a whopping $329.95 AUD

Yikes.

The PlayStation Portal now has an Australian price of $329.95 AUD.

As we’ve previously written, the Portal is quite pricey, coming in far higher than that of its competitor, the Backbone. The Backbone, which comes with iOS’ Lightning or standard USB-C connectors, will set you back $179 AUD instead and offers up more functionality than the Portal.

The Portal is a remote play device that connects to your PS5 using wifi. It doesn’t support PlayStation Plus streaming (not that we have that in Australia), nor PSVR 2.

In contrast, a Backbone plugs in directly to your iOS or Android device and can connect to your PS5 through remote play, can access PlayStation Plus streaming where available, and can also access a number of other streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam Remote Play and more.

Nevertheless, if the Portal’s big selling point of a DualSense-like controller wrapped around a portable screen ticks the boxes for you, you can pre-orders the device now.

Australia can expect the PlayStation Portal from 2 February 2024.
