Outbreak, new limited event for Rainbow Six: Siege, detailed

For the past few weeks Ubisoft has been teasing a new mode which will be coming to Rainbow Six: Siege. Today we can reveal that an alien invasion is indeed headed to the game and you better get some friends to help you fight them all off.

Outbreak will be part of the Chimera update dropping early March which the developers have called a gift for the fans of the game. The event will only be running for a limited time, which will be a 4 week period – so you had better get in quick. This co-operative experience will see you team up with 2 other players to try and complete a number of objectives while fending off hordes of alien enemies.

A small pool of the operators from Rainbow Six: Siege will be available to play with in Outbreak, which will include the newly announced operators Finka and Lion. There are 3 huge maps in Outbreak which have been specifically designed for this mode – Hospital, Resort, and Junkyard. Each map tells a story about what is happening with this invasion, and you’ll have to work through multiple tasks to try and survive. This can include finding objects spread throughout the region which allow you to proceed to the next area, protecting other characters from waves of attacks, or clearing a building and blowing up some weird gooey alien structures.

There are 5 enemy types that you’ll come across in Outbreak which have different behaviors and abilities. There’s the Grunt which individually can be quite easy to take care of, but if you get swarmed by many they can do a fair bit of damage. There are Rooters that can teleport around you, and have an area of effect ability that traps players who stand in one location for too long. The Apex can obstruct your visibility with its ability, but will also spawn in other enemies to attack you. Breachers are able to do some devistating exploding damage if they get to close to you, or they can even take out your fortified walls. Then is the Smasher, a massive bruiser which soaks a lot of damage and has a charging attack which can knock you off of your feet.

One of the interesting aspects of Outbreak is that there is a lot of replayability in the mode. Not only is there the different operators you can try to beat it with, but there are 2 types of difficulties to pick from – normal and pandemic. Adding to that the mode also has randomised elements so not every game will be the same – such as you can encounter different enemies or objectives can spawn in different locations.

Outbreak is a tense experience and something which is very different from the core game of Rainbow Six: Siege. It is astounding that this is being labeled as a limited time event because there seems to have been a lot of work being put into this mode and one that fans are going to have a hard time letting go when it disappears.

Rainbow Six: Siege is available now on Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Outbreak will be available to play from early March for a limited time
