Niantic, Telstra partner for 5G-powered AR multiplayer battle game

Codename Urban Legends looks neat... if you can play it, that is.

Niantic and Telstra have partnered for a 5G-powered augmented reality (AR) battle multiplayer game demo called Codename Urban Legends.

“If you ever played Pokémon Go, you will know that having the right network is key to enjoying a smooth gaming experience,” Telstra’s Kim Krogh Andersen wrote in a blog post. “And when you combine this with a multiplayer experience, it is crucial you are playing on a high capacity, high-speed network like our 5G one to ensure you get a great experience.”

The partnership also means that the Aussie telco is part of Niantic’s Planet-Scale AR Alliance alongside other companies around the world.

Codename Urban Legends is expected “soon” on “select 5G mobile carrier stores” and is reliant upon 5G coverage. Telstra says it will have 75% of our population within 5G coverage areas by the end of June, though you might not have a 5G-compliant phone (or plan).

You can check out some Codename Urban Legends gameplay below. While it’s all well and good, we could see the functionality of the demo working its way into real-time Pokemon Go battles ourselves.
