A new PlayStation VR unit is coming to PS5

With one cord, a new controller and more.

A new PlayStation VR unit was today announced by Sony, planned for a release on PS5 sometime in 2022 or beyond.

“Our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity,” Hideaki Nishino said on the PlayStation Blog. “Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.”

Nishino also confirmed the unit will not launch in 2021, but will feature some dramatic improvements compared to the original PSVR: for starters, it will connect to the PS5 with a single cord. Next, it will come complete with fancy new VR controllers.

“One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics,” Nishino asserted. “That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.”

Sony stopped short of showing us what the new PS VR unit will look like. We’ll have more on the upcoming virtual reality device as it becomes available. We reviewed the original PlayStation VR unit way back in 2016.
