New DualShock patent adds back buttons without peripheral

A new DualShock patent, approved just after Christmas, adds back buttons to Sony’s PlayStation controller without the need for a specially-designed peripheral.

The patent, approved on 26 December and reported by Polygon, is for a new DualShock controller with two back-facing buttons. Curiously, the DualShock doesn’t have a PlayStation Home button like the current DualShock 4 controller but does come with a Light Bar unlike the controller that is to ship with the PS5 (for convienience, we’re calling that the DualShock 5).

It’s unclear when we’ll see this slightly different controller; we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, a special PlayStation Back Button Attachment will be available later this month and will offer similar functionality.
