Netflix account sharing to be limited to one household

Netflix has rolled out a new anti-sharing measure in Costa Rica.

Netflix looks to be limiting account sharing to one household after rolling out new anti-sharing measures in Costa Rica.

As per Eurogamer, Netflix has updated a help page to state, “A Netflix account is meant to be shared in one household (those who live with the account owner in their primary location).”

Accounts that use wi-fi to connect to Netflix will have to “watch something at least once every 31 days” in that aforementioned primary location to guarantee continued access. Generally, this refers to devices like smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Netflix also stated that “People who aren’t part of your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix”; those on Standard or Premium plans can add extra members — also known as people in other households — for “less than the price of our Basic plan”.

Devices that don’t check in from home once per month can be given seven days of grace (helpful if you’re on holidays), Netflix added.

The measures above are in response to declining Netflix subscriber numbers.

We’ll let you know when (or if) these measures are introduced to other regions.
