Kinect production ended by Microsoft

Kinect production has ended, Microsoft has recently confirmed.

The news was reported by way of Fast Company’s Co.Design, which spoke with Kinect designer, Alex Kipman, alongside Microsoft GM of Xbox Devices Marketing, Matthew Lapsen.

No further Kinect units will be produced, and remaining stock will be sold until reserves are depleted, the pair confirmed.

The first iteration of the Kinect launched with the Xbox 360; the Xbox One consoles initially came bundled with the Kinect as a mandatory peripheral. When Phil Spencer took over as Xbox head, one of his first actions was to separate the camera from the console itself, potentially driving many nails in the peripheral’s coffin. Once a much-discussed feature, the Kinect was barely mentioned as far back as Microsoft’s 2014 E3 press conference.

Neither the Xbox One S, nor upcoming Xbox One X, feature dedicated Kinect peripheral ports. While the former console offered a free adapter, the Xbox One X will not.

Do you still use your Kinect? Admittedly, this writer has disconnected his a long time ago…
