Gears 5 microtransactions confirmed for characters, cosmetics

While Gears 5 won’t feature loot boxes that beg for your real-world cash, players will be able to use their hard-earned to buy additional in-game characters and cosmetics through microtransactions.

This confirmation comes by way of GameSpot in conversation with Multiplayer Design Director Ryan Cleven and Esports Creative Manager Rose Gunson.

“As new Hero characters impact gameplay, they will be both earnable and purchasable to players to maintain an equal playing field”, the pair said. “Players have full visibility into the Hero Character they are selecting, and there is no randomness involved. New maps and Escape Hives will be free to all.

“While there are no purchasable loot boxes in Gears 5, there are earnable rewards obtained from simply playing the game. If players choose to purchase separate in-game cosmetic rewards using our premium in-game currency ‘Iron,’ they will have full visibility into what customization items they are purchasing.”

Good and bad, we guess?

Gears 5 heads to Windows PC and Xbox One as part of the Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Play Anywhere programs on 10 September.
