Foamstars uses AI art for “0.01%” of the game

Square said it wanted to "experiement with AI".

Square Enix has decided to “experiment with AI”, confirming that the upcoming title Foamstars will use AI art for small portions of the game.

Speaking with VGC, producer Kosuke Okatani said that the Foamstars team wanted “to experiment with AI as well”.

Stressing that, “[a]ll of the core elements in Foamstars – the core gameplay, and the things that make the game enjoyable – those are all made by hand,” Okatani estimated that “0.01% or even less” of the game features art made by artificial intelligence, or AI.

Okatani added that the AI art will feature on in-game album covers, adding, “[w]e loved what was created and used them as the final album covers players will see in the game. Everything else was created entirely by our development team.”

This news follows a statement from Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu that said the publisher would be “aggressive in applying AI” moving forward.

Foamstars heads to both PS4 and PS5 on 6 February, also part of PlayStation Plus between 6 February to 4 March.
