Epic cries poor, lays off more than 1,000 staff

"We're spending significantly more than we're making," says CEO Tim Sweeney.

Fortnite‘s Epic Games has laid off more than 1,000 employees today, with its CEO saying the company is “spending significantly more than we’re making”.

“The downturn in Fortnite engagement that started in 2025 means we’re spending significantly more than we’re making, and we have to make major cuts to keep the company funded,” Sweeney wrote in a larger post. “This layoff, together with over $500 million of identified cost savings in contracting, marketing, and closing some open roles puts us in a more stable place.”

This wave of layoffs mirrors a similar one back in 2023, in which more than 800 employees lost their jobs. It follows a recent decision by Epic to increase the price of Fortnite’s in-game currency, the V-Buck.

Sweeney did confirm that impacted employees will receive a severance package that includes at least four months of base pay, and extended “Epic-paid healthcare coverage”.

Our hearts go out to those impacted by Epic’s most recent wave of layoffs.
