Disney’s protection of Star Wars is the real reason EA pulled Battlefront 2’s microtransactions

A new report suggests that Disney, not fan backlash, is the real reason why EA has pulled microtransactions from Star Wars Battlefront 2.

The Wall Street Journal, citing a “person familiar with the matter,” says Disney Chief Executive, Bob Iger, was “alarmed” over fan response to in-game microtransactions. Iger had Jimmy Pitaro, Head of Consumer Products and Interactive Media At Disney, contact EA about the matter.

Additional sources, speaking with both VentureBeat and MP1st, confirm the report.

So while fan backlash got through to Disney, the report suggests it’s likely Disney’s actions lead to the temporary removal of Battlefront 2‘s in-game Crystal Store.

The report comes as EA has issued its own statement saying the removal will not impact the publisher’s fiscal year 2018.

EA turned off in-game microtransactions last Friday, just ahead of the game’s global release.

Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is available now on Windows PC, Xbox One and PS4.
