Australian video game industry has 1,275 current full-time employees

The Australian video games industry currently employs 1,275 full-time (or equivalent) positions, a new survey undertaken for the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association (IGEA) reports.

All up, the Aussie industry has grown 37% since 2017. Of current full-time positions, 34% are taken by programmers, 19% by artists and 11% by marketing, management and administrative positions, the survey suggests. More employed persons identify as female than in 2017, up from 18% to 21%. In a breakdown by city, Melbourne has the highest number of employed persons at 39%, followed by Sydney (23%), Brisbane (21%) and Adelaide (9%).

The survey also shows that 83% of all revenue generated from Aussie studios comes from overseas, with development for Asian markets rising from 37% in 2017 to 65% today.

“The survey shows that the Australian game development industry continues to grow and succeed despite a lack of policies to support our industry that makes it harder to develop games in Australia than in almost any other advanced economy,” said Ron Curry, CEO, IGEA. “Games are not only important for their contribution to the nation’s economy and screen sector, they are also interwoven into the fabric of Australian culture, with two-thirds of all Australians playing video games.

“Despite this growth, the Australian video games development industry is still diminutive compared to our peers, with Canada announcing this month that its games industry employed 48,000 workers and generated AU$4 billion, which is more than 20 times larger than our sector.”
