A new user interface is heading to the Xbox One in time for Christmas

Microsoft has detailed a new user interface that will arrive on the Xbox One this holiday season.

The update basically ditches the old, tile-based Windows 8.1-style interface for a vertical menu system that’s more like Windows 10.

The Xbox will run three tabs from left to right — Home, Community and Store — and items inside each will run vertically.

In the home screen, you’ll first see for an icon for the game you’ve last played, followed by access to its game hub, social sharing options and finally something its creators have highlighted. For that last option, we were given the example of a new facial hair pack that you could download for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Moving down from that first game, you’ll see other recently used items followed by your entire collection of games an apps, and last, your pins.

The Community area functions like an enhanced Friends area, offering up an activity feed and trending items.

The Store remains largely unchanged.

The Xbox Guide is greatly changed, taking residence on the left-hand side of your screen. An all-too-familiar double tap will bring the guide up, seamlessly on screen without changing the aspect ratio of the game you’re playing, and provides access to a variety of features, including a Friends list, general settings, messages, Party access and more.

You can check it all out in the video above.
