Report: The PS4 doesn’t support 3D Blu-ray playback at launch either [UPDATE: But will via patch]

Even though Sony has previously confirmed that the PS4 supports 3D Blu-ray playback, an online PS4 manual seems to indicate that the console does not.

Manuals.playstation.net states the following regarding the PS4:

Playback of the following types of discs is not supported.

  • CD

  • BD-RE ver.1.0

  • BD-R/RE XL

  • Blu-ray 3D™

  • DVDs that have not been finalized

We’ve contacted Sony Australia to see if they can clarify the situation.

It’s already been confirmed that the Xbox One will not support 3D Blu-ray playback, though Microsoft is considering it for a future patch.

UPDATE: Crisis averted, folks. Sony’s confirmed that 3D playback functionality will be available through the PS4 1.5 firmware, available upon launch day. You’ll have to connect to the internet to download the update, and you’ll need to remain connected to the internet the first time you wish to use Blu-ray playback.

Thanks to Vook for the tip!
